targeted disruption of the gene encoding mycaminosyltransferase does not lead to the accumulation of tylactone under conditions that normally favour tylosin production. Instead, the synthesis of tylactone is virtually abolished. Tylosin production is restored atabout 10% of the wild-type level when othe gene is re-introduced into the disrupted strain. When glycosylated precursors of tylosin are fed to the disrupted strain, they are converted to tylosin, however, tylactone also accumulates under such conditions
