Definition
A cilium (also called flagellum) found in Giardia species (trophozoite stage). It is nucleated by the left posteriolateral basal body and extends cytoplasmically toward the cell posterior, marking the left anterior boundary of the lateral shield and the left lateral region of the funis before exiting at the left lateral region of the cell body
Comment
Note that we deem cilium and microtubule-based flagellum to be equivalent; the primary term name reflects frequency of use. Also note that, due to the asymmetric nature of the Giardia trophozoite, this term is defined spatially as the trophozoite is viewed from the dorsal side, with the two nuclei dorsal to the ventral disc, and the ventral disc toward the anterior.
Synonyms
1. left posteriolateral cilium
2. left posterolateral cilium
3. left posterolateral flagellum
