metabolism
the enzyme is required in the biosynthetic pathway for creating 6-deoxy-5-ketofructose 1-phosphate, DKFP, a precursor sugar for aromatic amino acid biosynthesis in Methanocaldococcus jannaschii. This pathway is not leading via the nucleoside diphosphate mannose pathway nor a pathway involving nucleoside diphosphate derivatives of fructose 1-phosphate, fructose 2-phosphate, or fructose 1,6-bisphosphate, but methylglyoxal and a fructose 1-phosphate- or fructose 1,6-bisphosphate-derived dihydroxyacetone phosphate fragment are key intermediates in DKFP production, detailed overview. The stereochemistry of the aldolase reaction is consistent with MJ1585 also functioning as the fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase, EC 4.1.2.13, used in glycolysis. The MJ1585 aldolase does not catalyze the reaction of DL-lactaldehyde with fructose 1-phosphate, fructose 1,6-phosphate, or DHAP to form 6-deoxyallulose 1-phosphate or fuculose 1-phosphate
