DELTA(DCD) protein in the alr mutant (albinic leaf and growth retardation) is a loss-of-function protein that lacks binding ability. Deoxycytidine monophosphate deaminase deficiency causes accumulation of DNA damage in the alr mutant, sometimes leading to cell apoptosis. Deoxycytidine monophosphate deaminase deficiency triggers cell cycle checkpoints and arrests cell progression at the G1/S-phase. Decreased cell proliferation and defective chloroplast development in the alr mutant is demonstrated. The expression of nuclear and plastid genome replication genes is down-regulated under decreased dTTP
