A defect in the activity of DELTA6 and DELTA5 desaturases decreases the formation of gamma-linolenic acid, dihomo-gamma-linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid from dietary linoleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid.
