Details for glyoxalase III activity
4.2.1.130
Gene ontology ID
GO:0019172
Definition
Catalysis of the reaction: methylglyoxal + H2O = D-lactate
Comment
Note that this term was reinstated from obsolete. Also note that this enzymatic activity converts methylglyoxal to D-lactate in a single glutathione (GSH)-independent step. The other known route for this conversion is the two-step GSH-dependent pathway catalyzed by EC:4.4.1.5 (lactoylglutathione lyase) and EC:3.1.2.6 (hydroxyacylglutathione hydrolase).
Synonyms
1. (R)-lactate hydro-lyase
2. D-lactate dehydratase
3. glutathione-independent glyoxalase activity
