Normally-hydrated sickle erythrocytes without external phosphatidylserine have active APLT and inactive phospholipid scramblase. phosphatidylserine-exposing sickle erythrocytes show inhibited APLT and active phospholipid scramblase. Sickle reticulocytes have active APLT and active phospholipid scramblase independent of external phosphatidylserine. Sickle erythrocytes dehydrated in vivo show the highest proportion of phosphatidylserine-exposing erythrocytes and markedly inhibited APLT. Normal and sickle erythrocytes dehydrated in vitro have moderately decreased APLT. Rehydration results in significant recovery of APLT in erythrocytes previously dehydrated in vitro, but not in sickle erythrocytes dehydrated in vivo Homo sapiens
