six cDNAs encoding lysine decarboxylases (LDCs) are cloned from Huperzia serrata by degenerate PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE), phylogenetic analysis, one HsLDC isoform is functionally characterized as lysine decarboxylase. Recombinant transient expression of HsLDC in Nicotiana tabacum leaves specifically increase cadaverine content from zero to 0.75 mg per gram of dry mass.
