physiological function activated protein C is a serine protease that downregulates coagulation by proteolytically inactivating cofactors FVa and factor VIIIa, activated protein C proteolytically inactivates factor Va and thereby down regulates prothrombinase. Prothrombinase is inactivated by aPC during prothrombin activation much more slowly than Factor Va is inactivated in the absence of Factor Xa and prothrombin Homo sapiens
