Thereby the expression of the p450 and almA genes is only upregulated in the presence of medium-chain (C8-C16) or long-chain (C22-C36) n-alkanes, respectively, while alkB1 and alkB2 respond to both medium- and long-chain n-alkanes (C12-C26). Branched alkanes, like pristane and phytane, significantly elevate alkB1 and almA expression levels
