EUGO can efficiently catalyze the dehydrogenation of various phenolic ketones and the selective oxidation of a racemic 4-(1-hydroxyethyl)-2-methoxyphenol. Very poor substrates: 4-(1,3-dithiolan-2-yl)phenol, capsaicin, (4-hydroxyphenyl)acetonitrile, 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid, 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol, and 4-(hept-1-enyl)-2-methoxyphenol

EUGO displays a somewhat narrower substrate specificity than vanillyl-alcohol oxidase, EC 1.1.3.38. Although alcohols and 4-allylphenols are good substrates for the enzyme, 4-alkylphenols and ethers are hardly accepted
